In this issue

Surfing relies on balance—intersecting lines where art meets science, sport meets pastime, grind meets relaxation, meditation meets activity, and crowded locations meet solitary pursuits. Likewise, each publication interconnects surfing’s pillars: Travel, Surfers, Culture, Waves, Technique and Boards. Add historical “Moments”—Kelly Slater’s retirement mind games—and exclusive SL “Sections”, we celebrate the sea in all her moods as we tap into her energy, paddling out in our dark-sheathed seal suits.

Welcome to winter.

Instead of calendar dates, First Peoples observe seasonal changes happening on “Country”. For Kombumerri, waringbil (“very cold” weather from May to July) merges into ngirigawah (“felt in the forehead” as bodies are cloak-covered from July till September). There are numerous waringbil signals, including less rain, colder shorter days, whale migration, and reptiles hibernating. Some ngirigawah indicators are flowering trees (macadamia, coastal wattle, forest red gums, acacia and banksia) as well as birds building nests when nectar peaks.
