Parallels : return to glory with Fred Bonnef in Puerto Rico, paddle to the most remote island on Earth, go downwind in Greece and join Finn Mullen to uncover the perfect wave. We look at how to surf a monster sup and test this summer's premium touring boards‎.

Never Too Late To Join A Great Party

I’ve got a bit of a confession to make. Without realising it till quite recently, I’d been allowing the ‘shortboard mentality’* to creep in. You know, that box you voluntarily put yourself in when you’ve in fact got the whole world to explore.

Disneyland

Every now and again I’m reminded that no matter how messed up things get, there’ll be a little sequence of events that remind me that everything is in order. That even though life may get a little repetitive, if you allow yourself to open up to the possibilities and just go with it and you may just have an experience of a lifetime.

The Islands Of Middle Earth

Sao Tomé and Principe are two small African islands in search of balance on the Equatorial line. This island nation is tiny in size but carries big dreams: Principe Island is home to a unique and unprecedented experiment in sustainable development. Due to their exposure to South Atlantic swells the islands hold promise for surfers, but Carine Camboulives and Manu Bouvet have much more to share than the waves they found.

After working with Scottish gin brand Daffy’s as our drinks partner at the Dragon World Championships in 2017, I am truly a converted gin lover! So, when an invite came to visit their distillery in the highlands, for a day of SUP based botanical foraging, followed by gin making, I jumped at the chance. After a hectic week in the office, I flew north ready for a weekend of Scottish SUPing + gin sipping.

Return To Glory

We had a date with Puerto Rico. An island known to produce world-class spots and the biggest waves in the Caribbean. Several unknowns await us though: what state would we would find the island in after the hurricane? Will the locals accept us with sups? Was Captain American born on the island? And was the Pina Colada really invented in Puerto Rico?

The Marquesas Expedition

Many Years ago, I read an inspiring book called “Fatu Hiva”, written by Thor Heyerdahl, also known for his daring journey on the Kon-Tiki from South America to French Polynesia.

The Nile Special

The difference this year was that I had started working with Loco Surf and more importantly, paddling their iSups. My background is in kayaking but over the last couple of years the lure of white water stand-up has been shifting my attentions. I booked my Loco Amigo onto the next available flight on Skyscanner and that was me committed. The thirty hours or more traveling with a rolled-up sup was seamless; if you will excuse the unintentional pun and mixed metaphor.

Wind, Waves & Whitecaps A Downwinder In Greece

I must admit, when I looked for a perfect downwind spot in Europe, I didn’t immediately think of Greece. The French Atlantic coast sounded promising. Or Portugal. Until I saw some videos by John and Kostas Spinoulas, two passionate and skilled downwind paddlers who had discovered several downwind spots along the coast of Attika and on Corfu. Wind, waves, whitecaps and warm water. I knew I had to go.

Buy Once, Cry Once

Every day is full of decisions to make, some don’t mean that much to us, some do. Shall we have muesli or avocado, chai latte or tea? In the long run, it doesn’t really matter, however some decisions we face are a bit more meaningful: do you buy the car you really want or maybe something more economical and roomier for the family? You’ve got to such decisions right for an easy life. The streets aren’t full of Lamborghinis, they’re full of Qashqais.
