In this issue

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and a symbol of stability in a turbulent era that saw the decline of the British empire and disarray in her own family, died at the age of 96 on Thursday September 8th, 2022 after 70 years on the throne.

Nobody lives forever, but deep in our hearts we hoped that Her Majesty would go on to exceed her beloved husband Prince Philip’s 99 years, and maybe even equal the record of France’s Louis XIV, now still the longest reigning monarch with an astonishing 72 years on the throne.

She never expected to become Queen, the huge responsibility was thrust upon her with the early death of her father King George VI. When her father died in February 1952, Princess Elizabeth – then just 25 years old – became queen of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (known today as Sri Lanka), as well as Head of the Commonwealth.

This will be a momentous change for the Royal Family, and we can only hope that the new monarch, a keen environmentalist in tune with many of today’s climate change concerns, will do as good a job as his mother.

Life goes on, and so does Royal Life, and we hope you will treasure our own, very personal tribute to a remarkable lady who will always have a special place in our hearts.
