IN THIS ISSUE, we focus on Africa where untapped resources are high but food security continues to be a menacing issue. As you know, 2014 has been declared the Year of Agriculture and Food Security by the African Union. It has set impressive targets of one day seeing Africa produce its own food and becoming a net food exporter. It has even targeted zero hunger by 2025. Perhaps lofty, given the current situation and the challenges that food companies face such as storage, infrastructure, and other logistical difficulties. But wasn’t it John F. Kennedy who said that ambitions wouldn’t be ambitions if they weren’t lofty? Whether or not Africa can accomplish its goals by then, the important thing is that governments now are initiating more programmes to accelerate agriculture, particularly in the sub-Saharan region.
