Food industry in Iran and Nigeria
TO MOST of the world, Iran is associated with its nuclear programme more than with its high-quality pistachios and caviar, two of the country’s major food products. Sanctions imposed on Iran as a result of its non-compliance with UN demands, are indirectly impacting the way locals are choosing their food purchases as well. But under the circumstances, Iran has been able to improve food security and continue exports with neighbouring countries. Read more in market snapshot.
Also in this issue, we feature Nigeria’s food industry, a promising sector that is benefiting from much needed government reforms designed to improve business conditions. The country has a population of over 174 million – the largest in Africa – and an emerging middle class that is driving demand for better but affordable products, including processed foods.
In the GCC, the trend toward healthier eating has moved from simply consuming products that are low in sugar, sodium, and fat, to organically produced food. An interest in gluten-free products is also developing, according to interviewees in our outlook report.
In boardroom connection, we put the spotlight on Mbugua Ngugi, managing director, Kenya Nut Company, a producer of macadamia and cashew nuts in Nairobi.
