and the exploration of miniature paintings. Narender Dengle pays 
tribute in a review of a book on Amit Dutta's film about 18th-century 
painter Nainsukh. KRIVA students' studio work on the Braj region,
 reflecting on its culture, is highlighted. Saptrishi Sanyal challenges 
conservation frameworks in Shanti Niketan, emphasizing a dynamic approach. 
Landscape architects in Gurugram focus on sustainable design, 
and Prof. Kazi Ashraf introduces "Padma," exploring river journeys. 
Wishing a creative and peaceful new year ahead.

Although LA Journal has been featuring various perspectives, discussions
and projects based on the subject of Urban Design, this issue – Designing
Urban – brings to forefront the discourse in a formal way. We welcome
urban designers Rajat Ray and Biley Menon, who have curated this special
issue as guest editors.

The special issue based on Srinagar introduces the region while exploring its distinct features and character.
 It  compiles some of the hope stories in the realm of nature, culture and design belonging to the region.

In recent years, a diverse set of creative endeavors have been conceptualized, that
have expanded the boundaries of understanding the meaning and value of the
discipline of landscape architecture in the country. They have brought to the
forefront its multidisciplinary character, ever imbibing from various environmental,

various aspects of informal character, gender issues, and the evolution of historic cities. Kanchi Kohli and Manju Menon, eminent environmentalists discuss the idea of sensitive development. Sanjay Kanvinde and Shishir Raval review monographs of first generation of landscape architects.  

The issue features articles paying tribute to Pradeep Sachdeva, an eminent architect who passed away a few months ago. It also comprises of the concluding section of discourse on Redevelopment  Central Vista where professionals, thinkers, and professional bodies share their views about the project. A special feature on the works on Feisal Alkazi  is another highlight of the issue.  

In India, the distinctive informal form of urbanity is one of the main challenges in this war against COVID-19. The issue features diverse views in this realm along with discourses on design of public spaces including few streetscapes.

While introducing the natural and cultural histories,the issue profiles small creative endeavours in the realm of spatial design and landscape in theregion while highlighting various lessons that can be learnt from it. 
It shares views and perspectives of professionals and thinkers who are engaged in working and thinking about it.

The issue profiles the idea of Heritage Conservation under diverse set of frames - projects including restoration of Flora Fountain, Mumbai, Water Systems of Chitradurg Fort, Restoration of a Mughal Garden in Agra and other. Scholars like David Gilmartin and Ebba Koch discusses various related topics - role of environmental history, relationship of nature and culture, idea of public and private and so on. New works in the city challenge the notion of democracry and planned development.

The diverse range of works and thoughts of architect artist Gautam Bhatia provokes us to look for our space in a larger framework, to think about the social relevance of our chosen path. Sharing the experiences and philosophy of the practice of m/s Prabhakar B Bhagwat is fascinating for anyone who is interested in the confluence of art and landscape design and is a source of inspiration for professionals.

The issue features an interview with Sunita Narain, Director, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), where she answers questions on various areas of common interest and concern with the landscape profession about nature, environment and development.

The issue also includes the study of Agra presenting a perspective of looking at a city as part of a larger natural region. The feature on revival of Naubad Karez in Karnataka tries to integrate the traditional water system with the present day planning while Birkha Bawari in Rajasthan, celebrates the design vocabulary of traditional step well, using vernacular materials and traditional building techniques, in a contemporary social context of a group housing. A dilapidated quarry site located in the foothills of the mountain range of Aravalli, in the midst of an urban jungle is restored as a public park in an ecologically sensitive way – reviving the native flora. We need many such projects in urban realms, especially wastelands and dilapidated sites where along with the functional requirements, environ-mental and social parameters become an integral part of the design process. Another public park in the city adopts a completely different design expression – Nehru Park, celebrating five decades of its inception. The feature on the park researches its history, design ideas and development while mapping its documentation process.
