Each journey has a ‘there and back’
«The good thing about the journey is that there is a way back. For coming without going, time is enough» - Mia Couto. The good thing about doing what we like is felt in every publication we produce, because we feel proud of our work, of our people and of those who also fill our pages. The good thing about the journey is knowing that there is always a way back, a return to our origins, to our family, to our world, after travelling through distant lands. And it is in the comfort of your home that we want you to read every morsel of this journey we have prepared for you, and we want you to go, even if only in thought and desire, to all the places we have told you about in the articles in Inspiring Places. And remember that it will be «softly, softly, as if calling to you», that, in the heart of the mountains, the Bagatelle Courchevel restaurant will be waiting for you, where you will feel like you are touching the sky. You can also follow the journey of a great adventurer, Diamantino Martins, who has travelled the world; or become enchanted by the natural landscapes of Stromberg-Schindeldorf, in Germany, and play a round of golf at the Land&Golf; Hotel Stromberg; and, if you are still not convinced, discover the journey taken by Swiss watch making brand ORIS, which has mapped out a path of quality and timelessness. Along the roads of Angola 

Time and time again, we stop just to reflect on the beauty of nature. Other times, just to have a good chat, a wonderful laugh or a moment of introspection. On this journey, we find ourselves reflecting on the paths we have travelled in this warm land that is Angola, and we reach the end of another issue of V&G in the knowledge that the world is so immense and that we, social, rational and (at times) emotional beings, are just a ‘little speck’ wandering around. Always in search of happiness. In this issue, we wander along paths full of life, stories, features and places that fill our souls and make us feel more alive. The essence of the earth. We took to the roads between Luanda and Malanje. We experienced the smells, the laughter, the villages, rich in natural landscapes, and the lives of so many, who live with so little but show so much happiness. We returned, a few years having past, to the Kalandula Falls, and how magical they still are! A true luxury in the form of water. We spent the night in the Pousada facing the falls and listened to the deafening sound of the falling water. We visited Aldeia da Meia, where our hearts were filled with love. Here, out of nowhere, lives are renewed. We smiled, played, hugged and photographed moments that will mark us for life. We went to the vastness of the Black Rocks of Pungo Andongo... What a striking beauty it is to see rocks the size of the ‘world’. And so, we created another beautiful issue of V&G. Along the roads of Angola.

The brown earth, at times red, the blue sea, the starry sky, the power of the moon and the joyful days continue to seduce us with each passing day. As does our delight with every issue of V&G that is published. We’re still in love. With the land and with the people. We paint the horizons in so many colours on our pages. And it is with colour that each work by Angolan artist Bolondo Mbongo fills our souls. It is with colour that we present the exquisiteness of different places, such as Egypt, Six Senses Uluwatu Bali, Valverde Santar Relais & Châteaux, Stuttgart and the Aro Ha Wellness Retreat. And it is the green of the grass that colours the stunning scenery whenever we play golf – a sport that is on the rise in the country and which is currently in the hands of Almir Soares as the president of the Angolan Golf Federation. We continue to experience the scents, flavours, sounds and colours of Angola. That’s why we tattoo our pages with stories. And we ascribe meaning to what moves us. And we try to bring you, dear reader, the scent and the colours of life.

14 years with (and for) Africa

14 years ago, we began our journey across the warm lands of Africa. We arrived in Angola determined to make a difference. And we have. The years have passed and we have stuck to the same philosophy and values as always. We have challenged ourselves with each issue to ensure distinctive content. We’ve made history, we’ve told so many more stories, and in each interview and subject we’ve chosen, we’ve endeavoured to show our readers the best of what’s being done on this continent. And, you know what, we want to keep making a difference. That’s why, in this 14th anniversary edition, we have spoken to 14 business leaders from the most diverse areas of activity. The result can be seen on the following pages. Men and women, managers of their businesses, who share their testimonies with V&G and who, like us, put a lot of themselves into their work, their day-to-day lives... for themselves, for their companies, for people and for Africa. That’s why celebrating 14 years, together with those who continue to read us, and together with those who make the issues happen – partners, friends, the editorial and creative team -, is a source of pride. Because sharing our story, giving a voice to so many personalities, is what defines us best. We chart paths, reflect on memories, record events, consider the words of our interviewees and experience nature at its fiercest on every trip we make. 
In all this time, we’ve always wanted to surprise you. We hope to do so again in this 14th anniversary edition. Come away with a pleasant memory of us. Long live stories, culture, travelling and the good things in life. 

Sometimes we become numb to the hectic and eventful days we endure, which incessantly provoke in us the desire to want to show others that we are well and happy, even though this is not always the case. We know that this is common to all of us. For this reason, we invite you to listen to the wise words of septuagenarian Albina Assis, who brings with her a vast history of Angola, posts of great importance, such as Minister of Oil or State Adviser, while representing the country at various Expos, as National Commissioner, and who will be at Expo 2025, in Japan, as Commissioner-General. And feel Africa with you, in the works of art by Guizef Guilherme, who has African women as his main subject. 13 years, 13 women 
Thirteen years ago, we launched the Villas&Golfe; magazine in Angolan. For many, it was seen as a bold move, by others as a challenge. It was a challenge?! Today, 13 years later, we know that it was worth every effort, every moment shared with Angolans, every trip we made to every corner of this country, every person we met along the way and every friendship and bond we forged, because that’s what Angola is all about: it knows how to welcome you. After 13 years, the man behind this project, Paulo Martins, still sees Angola as a growing and prosperous country, as does our entire team, which works with the aim of showing the best of the country and its people. We celebrate our 13th anniversary with 13 magnificent interviews with 13 Angolan women from sectors, such as aviation, education, medicine, the motor industry, the media, the environment, sport, the oil industry, social projects, architecture, law, fashion and music. Delve into this issue with its feminine spirit and carefully read each message that these women have passed on. Then, feel the V&G universe in each of the other international features presented herein. Celebrate the magazine’s 13 years with us and stay with us for those still to come.

Feel Angola

With the smell of warm earth, and embracing nature at its purest, in these pages we bring you people, places where we have been and unique projects. We tread this soil, of warm people, of faces that mark destinations, of stories that stay in our memory. We begin with the words of the Ambassador of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea in Angola, Protasio Edu Edjang Nnaga, who takes on a tour of the history of his country and the path taken until it joined the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP). We continue with Tecnovia, a company working in construction and public works, in a narrative through the eyes of the CEO, Ricardo Santos. We head down the road to the province of Cuanza Norte, where surprises await us as we fill our lungs with fresh air and get to know the Fazenda Irmãos Chaves project – a rural tourism resort which has everything it takes to become a place of choice in the country. We unveil the canvases and the soul of Cristiano Mangovo, a native of Cabinda, who has made a name for himself by taking his gift to the Temporary Exhibitions Gallery of the Angolan Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. And as art is a portrait of life, in this issue we have also included the Europa Oxalá exhibition, which brings together 21 European artists with origins in the African colonies, on show at the main gallery of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon until August 22. Among so many other reasons we might have to travel, read and live, it is good that we remember that it is through people, through land, through history, through experience, that we become better people, even if the world shows us realities we never expected. This year, we have gained new powers, new ways of being and of getting things done. We rediscover new worlds. In this issue, we talk about architecture, about those who design and think it; about art and antiques, about those who look at and care for them... and we travel the world: we went to Fiji, an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, surely a idyllic destination you’ve already dreamt of; we wandered through the most bohemian quartier of Paris and took a break in the charm of the small Hôtel Particulier Montmartre; we hopped over to Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, in Italy, where a round of golf hit the spot; and we enjoyed some soothing moments at the Carrossa Hotel, Spa & Villas, in Mallorca, Spain, a five-star hotel whose history began 300 years ago. We have given our lives another meaning. That’s why, in this issue, we wanted to show you this universe of art and international architecture, through the eyes and sketches of those who create it, and some leisure gems, for a well-deserved break. The world has reinvented itself. And so have we. For this reason, we have designed a very international issue and take you to know places of peace, as if it were a collection of memories to take with you for life. ‘All aboard!’ for this trip. 2020 Retrospective 
The virus took mankind by storm. Silence ensued. The streets emptied, people could no longer embrace each other, and the world changed. We have experienced a 2020 of lockdown, fear, hope and struggle in the extreme. Our outlooks all became bleaker, around the globe. Plans were put off and dreams were left for another day. It is true that the today’s reality is different, but we must carry on living. And live to the full! So, for this issue, we wanted to fill your «heart» with emotion, with extraordinary people and places. We talk about serious matters, listening to voic- es from the worlds of medicine and science, and we lis- ten to the «heart» of Manuel Antunes, one of the leading figures in the world of cardiothoracic surgery. And it is with the voice of our «heart» that we take you to dream destinations, to get you excited and so you can pack your bags... and, in 2021, set off on a journey, to discover and feel emotions around the world. Stop at St. Michel Re- sort, in Cornwall, and enjoy a calm and relaxing holiday; or head off to the Maldives and stay at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island luxury resort, on a dream trip, in an idyllic location; or choose to connect with the Earth on the shores of Hoi Na beach in Vietnam and enjoy some deep relax- ation at the Four Seasons The Nam Hai, Hoi Na, Spa; but if you don’t feel fulfilled enough, lose yourself in the «sum of all the arts», in the El Ataneo Grand Splendid bookshop, in Buenos Aires, and live a wealth of culture. «Luxury» is a word used to segment things. The difficulty lies in using the word and knowing how and when to use it. In actual fact, what might be luxury for some, might not for others. If, for some, it is a cause for envy, for others it is a cause for admiration, for dreaming or even an illusion.
But what defines luxury real estate? Is it the price?
An expensive house might not be a luxury house. In Portugal, a house costing five hundred thousand Euros and above was once considered a luxury house. However, with the increasing value of real estate and the ongoing interest in our country, the bar has risen to at least one million Euros. If, in some countries, a house can be considered luxurious from 100 million on, the sky being the limit, in Portugal, the parameters are more modest. The demand for exclusive luxury properties in prime locations has increased significantly with the increase in foreign investment. Luxury resorts, villas and apartments, from the Algarve to the Minho, have become even more sought after by national and foreign investors, with other locations standing out thanks to the property boom, including: Lisbon, Oporto, Cascais, Braga, Guimarães, Aveiro, among so many others, all of which have become luxury hubs.
Portugal has entered the spotlight of the world, through tourism, Golden Visas, quality of life, security and climate, which are essential when it comes to demand.
Although there are changes related to the coronavirus pandemic, luxury remains, and increasingly so, space, privacy and security. As such, we will see a demand for farms and estates, in the country’s inland regions and in areas bordering large cities, which will increasingly represent luxury. In this issue, we bring you some projects and people who work in this segment – that of exclusive luxury.
Luxury real estate will increasingly be in demand and the world won’t be able to take its eyes off Portugal, thanks to its situation and its quality.
Pure and simple... 

«I have all the dreams of the world in me,» Fernando Pessoa said. I dream of the busy days of routine; of tight hugs; of smiles on faces; of people I haven’t seen for a long time; of simple touch; of day-to-day life free of all evils; and of the Villas&Golfe; team united in the interests of their work. Because that’s why we continue to strive and disclose the best of both worlds. 
There has never been anything like the moments we are experiencing at this time. But are we not all responsible for the weaknesses of the world?! We put this question to you as a form of reflection. Let us learn lessons from all that we have been through. We will observe the world with more calm and unity. And we, right here, spread the words of those with us in this issue of the magazine. From economy to communication; from science to politics; from culture to luxury, we bring you some of the leading names, among which, António Correia (part of the founding team of Banco Único, in Mozambique, and its current CEO); Paula Francisco (Minister of the Environment of the Republic of Angola, whose main challenge is environmental education and awareness raising); Nuno Malide (considered scientist of the year in 2019 by the media in Austria); Daniel David (the face of free and independent media in Mozambique); Selma Uamusse (the Mozambican gospel voice, who has been gaining in strength and expansion). We walk together towards a new year, new projects and new desires. Here’s to 2020! Sometimes, around here, it seems to us that everything has already been said and done, that we already know the colours, the smiles, the landscapes, the traditions and the African spirit by heart. But we don’t. There’s always so much more to discover and reveal. Time flies by and we remain here, on African soil. There’s still so much to get through. So many places to visit. Talents to promote. Flavours to taste. And conversations to have with locals. One year has passed by. Another one is just around the corner. And here we all are, as one, ready to continue walking.  
Behind us lies a yearning for our friends, with whom we have not been able to share as much of our time as we would have wanted, for our travels, for our comings and goings and, ahead of us, there lies the desire that we may come to achieve every missing piece.  
For all these reasons, let us welcome together a new year, a new issue of Villas&Golfe;, especially dedicated to Mozambique – a fertile and passionate land, of stories and conquests and of incomparable aromas and colours. Let us praise the country and the world with good things, telling you about here, the world about Africa. Along with the content characteristic of the magazine, in this issue we focus on luxury, wellness, glamour, art, golf, people and their intrinsic beauty.

The grandeur of the world is infinite. It is a blue planet where wishes are woven, and it is where lines and horizons cross that dreams are built and the difference is made. We all, in one way or another, construct life projects – some architectural, some design related, others leisure – and, then, there are those that remain in the drawer of utopias. However the most important thing is to build the foundations of life.
Some people start reading from the back pages first. We don’t know if you have this habit. But if you don’t, we set you the challenge of calmly leafing through the pages that follow this editorial devoted to architecture projects, design, real estate and resorts. A special issue to discover, which begins with the words of octogenarian José Forjaz – an unavoidable name in African architecture. The same is true of Victor Leonel Ragot, current president of the African Union of Architects (AUA), who tells us about the «little time» he has for creating architecture, and about the «difficulties» in reconciling the wishes of 42 countries. In the midst of so many projects, allow yourself be whisked away on the journey that will take you to the mysteries of the silverback gorillas in Rwanda, and long live nature and peace.

As we capture the time of Moira Forjaz, the photographer; of Albino Mbie, the musician; of Roselyn Silva, the designer; of Mário Macilau and Mauro Pinto, photographers, among other names, the world spun at a rapid speed, and we collected more testimonies to share in issue no. 53 of Villas&Golfe; África. Life is what you make of it. This is so true that, of all the people we listened to, of all the life stories, any one of them could have turned out so differently if at the right time the right choice had not been made. Some chose the pleasure of a camera flash going off, others preferred to enchant the world with the sound of their music and others still chose to design and take African pieces to the world of fashion. They are all great travellers. Each in their own field. Each one in their own time, but always capturing the best moments. Are they competitive? Perhaps they are. Are they capable? They have already proved that they are. Are they strong? Of this there is no doubt. Each of them has proved to be successful in their professional lives. And, of course, they still have many more challenges ahead of them. Each of them is seeking to improve the world, and so do we, to ensure time is not just recorded in memory. Magic has no fixed abode. It belongs to everyone. It is in each of us, and only we can pass it on to the world. Just as all places have something distinctive or a story to tell, we have a lot of magical moments to show you in the pages of issue no. 52. With the magic of time, we introduce you to the wine project of Mário Rocha – CEO of Antarte Mobiliário, which enjoys a strong presence in Angola –, where the wines of Herdade da Rocha have left the most pleasant aromas in the air. Also, with the magic of time, and always well assured, we conversed with Paulo Bracons, CEO of Saham Angola Seguros. Following our suggestions, why not take out some travel insurance, and head off and discover Slovenia or relax at the Tief Spa, in the city of Oslo, Norway? All you have to do now is choose. Because life is what we make of it. And the magic of time is in us!

As the future is the road to follow, while always looking at the present – which brings us so many good things and provides us with so many challenges –, we look forward to so many other days, filled with knowledge. And in this issue we bring it with us: the knowledge of those who lift the food essential to human life from the earth. We tell the story of Fernando Teles, founder of Banco BIC, in Angola and Portugal, who is now dedicating himself more to farming, in different parts of the world, as the quest for self-sufficiency is one of his priorities. For this citizen, as for so many others, economic and financial crises are not a problem, rather a challenge. And we all strive to walk towards the future when we think of a more prosperous tomorrow. To talk about Africa is to talk about an exciting continent. It’s talking about safaris, lions, giraffes, smiles... It’s talking about so much, so much even, that you lose track of what you’re talking about. It is talking about the third largest continent in the world. It is talking about one of the largest natural havens. Africa is located in each of Earth’s hemispheres: Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western. It is cut through by the equator and the Greenwich Meridian. There are 55 countries in this continent. It is big. Very big. It is large, not only in size, but also in riches, such as culture, tradition, nature, landscapes, history and people. For all these reasons we want to reach, with Villas&Golfe;, more African countries. We want to get our message across, show our effort and our dedication. We want to cross borders, countries and territories. Introduce new places, new people, new challenges. We want to continue exploring the plateaus, getting to know local cultures and making a difference. This is and will be the continent of great opportunities. Opportunities for growth clear for everyone to see. Tourism is already part of this evolution, as are so many other businesses. We want to keep on writing for you. Then, if you want to take a step closer to paradise, in the middle of the tropical rainforest, in the Caribbean Islands, enjoy the Ladera Resort, where temperatures hover around 24º C. Remember that this year was made of joy, challenges, achievements and conquests. Reflect. Learn. Light up the life of those you love. Because the best thing in life is to live it intensely. Every day is a new day for us, just as every new issue of Villas&Golfe; is another conquest. We respect roots, we take long treks, we observe lifestyles and we discuss serious issues, always from a balanced perspective. We’ve never been alone on this long journey. We’re joined by a free spirit. And so, in this issue, we take a look at 38 years of power of José Eduardo dos Santos – Angola’s president since September 1979 – and at his successor João Lourenço – who won the presidential election on August 23. But we have so much more to show you: a trip to Prague, a city with gothic, renaissance and modern architecture; a cosmopolitan setting to rest in one of the classic wonders of the Algarve, Portugal, the Anantara Vilamoura; and the Greek goddess of calm seas – the new Bentley Continental GT Galene. Without any qualms of guilt, we can dare to say that we can’t do without comfort and pleasure when thinking about wonderful things in life. We assume that we are entitled to them. And we are. You just need to want them!
