From unmanned aerial systems to being tracked across the electromagnetic spectrum, what is Fires role as the future of war becomes more and more reliant on networks of computers? This issue discusses fighting in degraded and destroyed operations; operational security liabilities; and training to emphasize cover, concealment, dispersion, and operating without emitting a signal.

There are various levels of shared knowledge and capabilities across sister services, allies and partners. How is Fires successfully integrating on the battlefield? This issue will discuss employing centralized vs. decentralized Fires; conducting joint/multinational tactical fire direction; developing a common understanding with joint/multinational Fires assets/systems; developing and refining fire support plans and supporting products; improving airspace coordination and clearance of Fires and more.

What steps are being taken to gain a common defense and a complementary capability with allies and partners? What technical and tactical gaps are present?

The Fires Center of Excellence creates the world’s premier Fires force, ready to “fight tonight,” employ responsive cross-domain Fires, win in a complex world, and return home safely.This issue will discuss school house training including new rigor in professional military education, Fires career paths and other Army structures currently in place or ones that are necessary to create a lethal force.

The Red Book is a year in review for the Fires force including Reserve, National Guard and Marine units. The Red Book highlights U.S. Army Field Artillery, Air Defense Artillery and U.S. Marine Corps Field Artillery unit activities at the brigade-level and lower.

How are we balancing future and past training methods? This issue will discuss counter unmanned aerial systems, electronic warfare and cyber integration, simulation vs. field time training, and lessons learned from Operation Inherent Resolve, Syria, Ukraine and more.

September-October 2018, Competitive convergence. The Army wants to be ready to defend against formidable enemies including Russia, North Korea and China. How is the force preparing?
This issue will also discuss the multi-domain battle and how Fires is moving to fight in this way, the Fires Battle Lab’s Fires Convergence Experiment, the Army Targeting Center’s expanded mission and Field artillery and air defense artillery branch transformation.

This issue will cover leveraging the division and brigade unmanned aerial system (UAS) fleet to support Fires tasks, counter-UAS strategy, from concept to reality, synchronizing intelligence collection and fire support, understanding electronic warfare in the era of cross domain Fires, field artillery and air defense artillery schools training Soldiers and Marines to meet and identify the challenges.

July-August 2017, Expanding cross domain Fires: The Fires force doesn’t fight from land only. The field artillery and air defense artillery are integral parts of the multi-domain battle providing cross-domain Fires. Topics to be covered: supporting joint combined arms maneuver; leader development strategies supporting the expansion of cross domain Fires; the Army Targeting Center.

This issue will highlight the events and speakers of the 2017 Fires Conference. Topics include: winners of this year’s Knox, Gruber, Hamilton and Shipton awards; dedication of the 95th Reception Headquarters in honor of retired Gen. John Vessey; lessons learned from the Fires force (Combat Training Center through Warfighter).

The Fires force is evolving with new requirements, new recruits, less manpower and money to accomplish the mission. Topics to be covered: Merging military occupational specialties in field artillery and air defense artillery; changes to how the artillery engages and identifies targets; updates to weapon systems such as the IBCS and AFATDS.

The Army has always maintained its strength is in its diversity and the human element. This issue will look at how the Army is optimizing the human dimension by taking the best we have and making them better through intellectual optimization and advancing creative and critical thinking. Optimizing cognitive, physical and social strengths allows us to achieve advantage over a situation or adversary in ambiguous, chaotic and complex operating environments. Improved leader development and educational modernization are needed for cohesive team building; our force needs to win and move beyond the fight against sexual harassment, achieving gender equality and removing discrimination in military occupational specialities.

Leveraging JIM: Pieces of the Puzzle. This issue looks into how the Fires Soldier fights alongside sister services and allied forces to be effective throughout a theater. Soldiers execute joint training with Marines, Navy, and Air Force personnel to simulate battlefield environments and prepare for real world threats. Stories will also look into how Soldiers work with allied forces to strengthen Joint, Interagency, and Multinational relations and learn better ways to defend critical assets from air and missile threats in a hybrid war.

With the Army's active-duty end strength dropping to 450,000 by the end of FY 2017 the Fires force is leveraging the human dimension to support the Army's implementation of Force 2025 and Beyond. A leaner, more dynamic Army is navigating its way against elusive enemies in a time when restructuring and the return of division artillery and sownsizing are occurring simultaneously. This issue will look into how enhancing the Fires platfrom through training, doctrine and leadership development allows Soldiers to effectively fight with new efficiencies.
