IN SHORT, the most fascinating story about Shackleton goes something like this: Back in the early 1900s, in the heroic age of pioneering polar exploration, a man by the name of Ernest Shackleton attempted to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic. At the end of 1914, he and his crew of 27 men set sail on a British expedition ship named Endurance, but the vessel became trapped in ice. It eventually sank and the crew were stranded.
What ensued is a true story of survival against all odds. (The location of the sunken ship is too great a maritime mystery to be left uninvestigated, so a new mission has been planned to locate the wreck.)
