Sticky Situations & How To Cope With Them
Every so often I get asked by a modeller which adhesive can be used for this or for that job on a model kit as the model cement we know can only do certain tasks without flaws. You cannot attach chrome parts with it and it tends to make a mess of clear parts. So I thought it would be a good idea to do an article on all the different adhesives I use in the hobby and which jobs they do and cannot do. Hopefully, it will provide the readers with some useful information they need or might need on a future project. The adhesives I used can be loosely divided into two groups namely Solvents and Mechanical bond adhesives.
SOLVENTS
These products dissolve the surfaces of the styrene plastic that are glued and “weld” them together. The normal liquid cement falls into this category. Other products that also fall into this category are Acetone and Methyl Ethyl Ketone amongst others. However, these products only work for styrene to styrene joins and not chrome to styrene or dissimilar materials like resin or metal to styrene joins.
