Posing for the camera in her lace gown, Laëtitia Nguyen looks every inch the happy bride. She had meticulously planned every second of her big day, and was determined to enjoy it. But just one thing was missing – the groom.

Laëtitia’s fiancé had left her three months earlier, but rather than cancelling her long-awaited wedding, she decided to go ahead with the £20,000 celebrations, marrying herself instead.

DEVASTATED

Laëtitia, 38, says, “When my fiancé ended it, I was utterly devastated. But I decided that if he didn’t want to marry me, I’d marry myself.

“It was just like a normal wedding, but without a groom. I wore a beautiful dress and invited guests. There were speeches and I said vows – I promised to love myself.”

Finance manager Laëtitia met her ex-partner in March 2014.

“I’m French, but we met through friends in Brisbane, Australia, where we both lived,” she says. “He was a consultant from the UK and made me laugh. We were friends at first, but a year later, in March 2015, we became a couple and I fell in love with his brilliant mind. I’d had serious relationships before – I was with someone for 10 years – but this was different.”

In October 2015, Laëtitia’s boyfriend proposed. They decided to marry on the Greek island of Santorini on 27 May 2017.
