They’ve both been known for their sense of style, good looks and plenty of chutzpah. Malaika Arora Khan and Amrita Arora Ladak have through the years tried their hand at veejaying, films and are now enjoying the role of motherhood and ladies who lunch. In a freewheeling chat with Farhad J Dadyburjor, the glamorous sister-duo take a nostalgic trip down memory lane while talking about how their relationship has evolved over the years, what’s the most annoying habit of each other and the individual relationships they share with their brother-in-law.
Growing up, who was the protective one?
Malaika: Me, I was the protector. Always looking out for her. Basically I think I had taken on the role of a surrogate mother to her purely because we were brought up by my mom and she was always working.
Amrita, did you find it annoying at all, to be under her watchful eye?
Amrita: Growing up not at all...
Malaika: That was much later (laughs).
Amrita: Malaika was very hands on, she would come and check on me in class. I was very quiet...
Malaika: You were very naughty!
Amrita: Yes naughty and would get in trouble...any problem I would just run to her. She was the saviour.
Malaika: I used to take the blow, the fall for it all (laughs).
What about when it came to boyfriends, was she strict with you on that front too, on who not to date?
Amrita: Yah. But boyfriends were much later on, in college. But at that time it was so frivolous—is he nice looking, is he cute, all that. And she wasn’t so worried because she knew it was all crushes.
Malaika, whose approval did you seek?
Malaika: See, Amrita was younger and scattered while I was more in control. So while approval was required from my mom and her, mostly I was pretty much an entity on my own. I think the main difference between us is that I’m not somebody who reaches out too easily to people. I keep things to myself. She’s not like that. She’s completely the opposite. I tend to internalise most things and she tends to externalise most things.
How would you say your relationship has evolved over the years?
