It was the news that Britney Spears and hundreds of thousands of fans had been waiting for. On November 12, Judge Brenda Penny finally ended the singer’s 13-year ordeal with immediate effect – giving the hitmaker control of her life for the first time since 2008. “As of today, the conservatorship of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is hereby terminated,” Penny concluded.
Celebrations quickly erupted outside the courthouse, with fans popping pink confetti and dancing along to Britney’s hit song ‘Stronger’. For many, campaigning to end the singer’s conservatorship had become more than just a pastime – with some coordinating rallies and travelling across the country to attend demonstrations. “All the hard work, the sacrifice and calling off work. It’s been worth it and I would do it all over,” one #FreeBritney supporter Junior Olivas, who helped organise the first fan rally outside the court in 2019, said after the decision was made. “This is lifechanging for her.”
“It was a monumental day for Britney Spears,” the singer’s attorney, Mathew Rosengart, concurred while speaking outside the courthouse – before adding that the #FreeBritney movement had been essential to ending the legal arrangement. Britney herself, who appeared virtually during the hearing, was full of praise for her fans. “Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy,” she tweeted. “I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day!!!! Best day ever.”
