As the second year of the pandemic drew to a close, 2021 couldn't help but deliver one final piece of bad news, claiming the life of Betty White. The beloved star, whose groundbreaking Hollywood career spanned over eight decades, passed away peacefully at her LA home in the early hours of December 31, her agent Jeff Witjas confirmed to People magazine.

White was set to celebrate her milestone 100th birthday on January 17. Jovial until the end, the actress joked about the secret to her long and happy life just days before her death. "I try to avoid anything green. I think it's working," the actress quipped to People.

The sad news led to an outpouring of grief from Tinseltown. "The world looks different now,"White's The Proposal co-star Ryan Reynolds, 45, said in tribute on social media.
