Experts share how to protect your baby from catching a group B strep infection.

Don't Fear This Test

AT MY 36-week prenatal appointment for my second child, I had the standard vaginal-rectal swab for group B streptococcus (GBS), a bacterium found in the gastrointestinal tract of about a quarter of all pregnant women. I didn’t give it another thought until a nurse called with my positive test results; then my anxiety spiralled. Group B strep (which is unrelated to strep throat) poses little risk to an expectant mother, but if it’s passed to the baby as he makes his way through the birth canal, it could potentially cause sepsis.

“What can I do to keep my baby safe?” I asked, my worry multiplying by the second. Doctors explain how to minimise the risks to your newborn.
