Modern digital cameras have a problem. Actually, they have several, but one that is encountered time and time again is a lack of dynamic range – the inability to capture both very light and very dark tones in an image.
This leads to either a silhouette, where a dark subject – be that because your subject is actually dark, or merely darker than an extremely bright backdrop – is unrecognisable except for its outline against a perfectly exposed background, or more commonly a nicely exposed subject with the sky behind them washed out to pure white.
