Follow Justin Smith of WWF-SA’s lead by choosing wines produced by top farms with Wine Conservation Champion status. These six will start you on your eco-friendly drinking ways
1. Cederberg Private Cellar
These vineyards are among the highest in the Western Cape at 1 036 metres above sea level. Only about 300 hectares are used for farming, the holiday resort and staffhousing, with the rest placed under CapeNature’s care, with 5 200 hectares under conservation and forming part of the Greater Cederberg Biodiversity Corridor. Cederberg Cellar farms sustainably and, because this isolated area has minimal disease, this allows for little to no chemical intervention. They also undertake continuous eradication of alien vegetation.
THE WINE TO TRY:
Cederberg Sauvignon Blanc is a delicate combination of green fig and white asparagus with hints of gooseberries. R124.99
2. Paul Cluver
This family-run farm in the Elgin Valley is very mindful of the environment, with 60% of the total farm under conservation through a stewardship agreement with CapeNature in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. They have also built over 40 kilometres of single track for mountain biking as part of the Wines2Whales cycling race, creating employment for 10 people. The farm is known for initiating the Thandi Project, enabling workers to own orchards and vineyards.
