The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” says the famous Chinese proverb, and this is certainly true when it comes to walking in France. Thousands of kilometers of marked paths wind their way through the country’s spectacularly diverse landscape, where rolling vineyards meet fragrant lavender fields and vertiginous mountains drop down to breathtaking coastlines. And therein lies the beauty of walking in France – there’s something for everyone, whether you’re an experienced walker with all the gear or prefer to take things at a more leisurely pace. From strenuous climbs and scaling extinct volcanoes yes, you can do that too in Auvergne – to sedate strolls through chocolate-box villages and bustling cities, you’re sure to find a route to suit. If you’re struggling to narrow down the choices, our walking guide should set you on the right track.
