Marine Engineering: Call Of The Deep Blue Oceans

Traversing high seas and exploring the vast depths of oceans have always been one of man’s most cherished dreams but building and maintaining ships, cruise liners, ferries, speed boats and submarines is a very challenging task for engineers. The challenge lies in the development and application of precision engineering and superior metallurgical technologies for making the vessels durable enough to survive the enormous water pressures at the surface of the ocean or at greater depths.

Ocean Engineering and Marine Engineering

Ocean Engineering deals with the design and development of ships and submarines. With India fast emerging as a world leader in the shipbuilding sector, a career in Ocean Engineering is very lucrative for science students. “The field of Ocean Engineering & Naval Architecture offers a wide spectrum of career prospects and opportunities for the graduating students to work in India and overseas. The students find suitable placement in diversified fields such as Naval Design and Research Organisations, Shipyards, Offshore industry, Software industry and other allied jobs,” says Dr. Prasad K. Bhaskaran, Head of Department, Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture, IIT- Kharagpur.

Marine Engineering is an associated branch of study that deals with the maintenance and operations of vessels. Marine engineers basically get trained in operation, repair and maintenance of machinery on board merchant navy ships and commercial cruise liners. Marine engineers, therefore, takes on roles relating to maintenance of main engines, auxiliary engines and supporting systems such as pumps, firefighting systems, steering engine, important piping, sewage system, etc.
