King Krishna Devaraya had a royal teacher by the name of Thathacharya who belonged to the Vaishnavite sect, the followers of Lord Vishnu. Thathacharya was very opposed to the Smarthas who followed the tradition of Adi Shankaracharya.

Prejudice

Whenever Thathacharya stepped out of his house, he covered his face with his cloak so that he would not have to look at any Smarthas. The learned Smarthas and the other people of the town wanted to teach Thathacharya a lesson, but were afraid to do so since he was the royal teacher of the king. After a lot of pondering, they fnally decided to entrust this job to Tenali Raman. Together, all the learned people went to Tenali and asked him to fnd a solution. Tenali Raman realized that this going to be a difficult task, yet assured them that he would do his best.
