The Sri Gajendra Varadha Perumal Temple

The Sri Gajendra Varadha Perumal temple in Tamilnadu proves the benevolence of Lord Vishnu, as the Savior and Benefactor of all creatures on Earth. Read on… The Sri Gajendra Varadha Perumal temple is located in a village called Thirukavithalam, around 3 kms from Papanasam in Thanjavur district of the Indian state of Tamilnadu. The village Thirukkavithalam is located between two Rivers, the Kaveri and Kollidam. This village having a temple dedicated to Lord Sri Gajendra Varadha Perumal is also called as ‘Kapisthalam’, as Lord Vishnu once gave His divine darshan to Lord Hanuman here!

The Sri Gajendra Varadha Perumal temple is one of the hallowed 108 Divyadesams of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is worshipped as Lord ‘Gajendra Varadhan’ (saver of an Elephant) and ‘Aatrankarai Kidakkum Kannan’ (the Lord present near the banks of a River) in this temple. The Lord’s consort Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped as Goddess Ramamanivalli in this temple. The glory of the Lord in this temple has been sung by Saint Thirumazhisai Azhwar, in his devotional work ‘Naanmukan Thiruvanthathi’. Also, the greatness of this temple has been described in the ‘Divya Prabandha’ (medieval Tamil literary work of the Vaishnavaite Azhwar saints) between the 6th-9th centuries A.D. This temple is also one of the ‘Panchakanna Kshetrams’- one of the five temples dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna in Tamilnadu.
