Look around your home – do you really need that chair by the seating area in the living room? Do you need all those picture frames? Do you absolutely need that chunky coffee table when all you do is use it to place your cup of coffee on every now and then? If the answer is ‘no’, you’re in the right place. This is where you will learn all about being a minimalist and how to incorporate that decor philosophy into your interior scheme to be able to lead a simpler life.
Living with what you need rather than what you have or want is at the crux of this type of interior design, making it more a way of life rather than just a design scheme. In no way does this mean that you cannot lead a luxurious life. With this set of pointers, you will understand how you can live as lavishly or as simply as you please when you adopt the way of a minimalist.
If being a minimalist piques your interest, use these simple strategies to achieve this concept in your home.
1 DECLUTTER
The first thing you need to do is declutter. This is hands down the most important aspect of minimalism. Over the years, you might have accumulated a plethora of items, either impulse buys, holiday memorabilia or gifts. While you do use them all, they can make your room look crowded and messy, not to mention all the dust these items tend to gather. When decluttering, start small: spend around five to 10 minutes a day figuring out what you really need, and slowly start taking the things you don’t need out of the rooms. Are those cushions one too many? Reduce a couple. Is your tabletop over crowded with artefacts? Maybe take one off? The idea is to end up with the things you absolutely must have. Gaining additional space is the cherry on the cake!
