There&rsquo;s no denying that Battle Princess Madelyn, an action-platformer with a colorful 16-bit aesthetic, is influenced by Capcom&rsquo;s Ghouls &lsquo;n Ghosts. Not only does the titular battle rincess have to fight through waves of undead monsters by hurling an endless supply of spears at them, she even has the same comical knees-in-the-air run as Arthur. But this is, unashamedly, an homage to that series, and developer Casual Bit isn&rsquo;t trying to hide it.Retro platformers are a dime a dozen on PC these days, and a lot of them feel like little more than a cynical attempt to cash in on the nostalgia of gamers of a certain age. But like Yacht Club&rsquo;s superb Shovel Knight, Battle Princess Madelyn feels like the product of a genuine passion for that era of game design. It&rsquo;s also gleefully silly, its amusing, light-hearted story recalling a time when games didn&rsquo;t take themselves quite so seriously.A lot of developers try and fail to capture the magic of beloved old games, because it&rsquo;s very difficult to do well, but Casual Bit has obviously paid a lot of attention to Capcom&rsquo;s game. It has the same energy and detailed animation, and the screen explodes with color and chaos as you fight through hordes of skeletons, ghosts, and man-eating plants.The SNES-style pixel art comes with shaders and effects such as real-time lighting, reflective water, and swaying foliage, giving it a contemporary feel. But the game itself is as old school as it gets, with&mdash;at least in the pre-alpha demo I played&mdash;no concessions to modern game design. Getting from one end of the level to the other, killing as many monsters as you can along the way, is as complicated as it gets. And, of course, there&rsquo;s an enormous, screen-filling boss to conquer.The finished game will add more complexity, such as Madelyn&rsquo;s faithful puppy&mdash;who died and now follows her around as a ghost&mdash;being able to fire projectiles. Different suits of armor will be available, each with its own ability. Self-adjusting difficulty is another interesting feature, which will make the number and ferocity of enemies increase if you&rsquo;re breezing through the level&mdash;and vice versa if you&rsquo;re struggling. The idea, the developer says, is to make the game appeal to both casual and hardcore players. I wish more games did this.Battle Princess Madelyn still has almost a year of development left, but it already looks, and feels, pretty solid. There&rsquo;s something satisfying about the combat and the way the screen erupts with flames, popping skulls, magical light, and fizzing particles as you mow enemies.I also like the simulated scanlines that make it look like you&rsquo;re playing on an old CRT monitor, and the option to choose between a 16-bit soundtrack or a modern orchestral score. But while a tribute to Ghouls &lsquo;n Ghosts is fine&mdash;and something I would definitely play&mdash;I would like to see Casual Bit experiment a little more with the formula before its release next year.
