Beauty and art have always been intertwined. But it's not often that you find a beauty and skincare brand so heavily invested in art and culture, that actively gives back to artists, photographers, and even museums both monetarily and in terms of invaluable support. La Prairie, the luxury Swiss skincare brand, is an exception to the rule, setting itself apart from other cosmetics brands with its keen sense of true luxury and its devotion to elevating beauty in all its forms.
La Prairie has been taking part in Art Basel since 2017 with its own pavilion that supports artists and photographers. Leaning into its Swiss roots, the brand has also come together with Fondation Beyeler, a museum in Roehen (near Basel) that features modern and tribal art. This year, the brand is a partner in Mondrian Evolution, an exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler. This exhibition marks the culmination of the Piet Mondrian Conservation Project - a two-year-long investigation into seven of the artist's works using modern techniques, in order to uncover deeper insights into his paintings. The exhibition brings together over 80 works by Mondrian (1872-1944), who is widely considered to be the master of abstraction. Ulf Küster, the curator of Piet Mondrian: Evolution tells us more about the exhibition, which runs from 5 June to 9 October, and the new discoveries that were made in the process.
Can you please tell us how the Piet Mondrian Conservation Project has helped you in the curation of the Piet Mondrian: Evolution exhibition?
We have been thinking about doing a Mondrian exhibition since 2017. The Piet Mondrian Conservation Project, which began in 2019, helped shape the questions and answers which were important in the process of the curation of the exhibition.
