Don't Quit Life
Glimpse|September 2019
Suicide is one of India’s leading causes of death amongst its youth. On an average around more than two Lakh people commit suicide every year. But we still lack a proper National Prevention Suicide Policy in India. Suicide does not even make a mention in our Public Healthcare System. According to WHO suicide is the second leading cause of death amongst 15-39-year-olds globally. India accounts for over a third of global suicides amongst women every year. It is time we address this grave problem plaguing us before we lose more precious lives to suicide only because we fail talk about it.

Don't Quit Life

Did you really want to die? No one commits suicide because they want to die. Then why do they do it? Because they want to stop the pain-Tiffanie DeBartolo. The reasons for embracing death can be many. There are many triggers which inflict pain both physical and mental. But pain, when does not find a healthy outlet, nestles somewhere inside the human psyche and slowly but steadily keeps biting the insides until one day the person decides to end it all but pulling the trigger on life. But pain does not end with death; instead it just gets shifted to the loved ones the dead person leaves behind.

The decision to end one’s life many a times is taken in the spur of the moment mostly when a person is extremely angry, hurt or in pain. But sometimes the decision is cemented as a result of a snowball effect wherein a decision is formed over a period of time depending on some unfavorable events or incidents happening in one’s life such as financial crisis, illness, bullying, abuse, depression and lack of self-confidence.

In 2016, the suicides in India increased to 230,314 and it became a common cause of death in people in the age groups of 15-39 years. But now the numbers are ever-increasing. It is reported that about 800,000 people die by committing suicide worldwide every year out of which 135,000 (17 per cent) are the residents of India which has 17.5 per cent of world population.

The issue of mental health amongst students was also addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his radio address Mann Ki Baat where he also urged for “expression of depression instead of its suppression”.
