It is sad to say that Singapore has become a graveyard for restaurant upstarts in recent years, thanks to astronomical rental costs, difficulty in finding people of aligned values, and the rise of customers who hanker for more out-of-the-box experiences. Six restaurants – be it home-style or intimate – prove that small spaces are not shortcomings but the reason why they are more fun to dine at.
THE FRENCH RESTAURANT THAT SITS ONLY 24
Posh but discreet in its décor (the restaurant features an open kitchen that is fronted by the dining room), this sensibility carries to the menu. There is only an à la carte menu for day and night, a three-course lunch set menu, and a six-course dinner. Featuring little twists and surprises, Rhubarb Le Restaurant fan favourites include the Confit Trout with Beetroot Relish, Zucchini Flower and Passion Fruit, and Signature Pigeon Breast and Leg Confit with Rhubarb and Rose Purée. If one is looking for wine pairings, the restaurant stocks more than 250 labels with 99 per cent of them being of French origin.
