The elegance of Kim Jones is designed as a total look that deftly blends haute couture tailoring and sportswear.
Who could have overlooked the 10-metre-high predominantly pink BFF sculpture by KAWS donned in a black rose suit and carrying a Bobby-shaped perfume bottle at the Dior Men Spring/Summer 2019 show? Set within the walls of one of the barracks of the Republican Guards in Paris, Kim Jones held his fresh, colourful, ethereal debut, which marked the dawn of a new Dior era. Prince Nikolai of Denmark opened the show to the electronic beats of Born Slippy by Underworld while Grammy Award winner DJ Diplo set the beat for the models.
It sent out a loud and clear message – that a fresh interpretation for Dior was well underway, though fashion lovers had anticipated that they were in something amazing from the moment word of Jones’ appointment to the Parisian luxury brand had spread. For his first collection as artistic director, Jones chose the loosely defined couture design codes. That was what we saw from the show: men’s garments with a sharp focus on tailoring, construction, fabric, and wearability.
