Tampons liberate. This little plug allows girls to dance, cycle, and even swim on a super heavy flow day! But is it truly a brainchild it claims to be, or will the missus have to pay a price for such freedom? Rashmi Ullas investigates.
I am a tampon user and can tell you with absolute certainty that I like it – but not on all period days. Tampons are convenient on the first few days of my period as it allows me to go about my business confidently without having to worry about embarrassing leaks. Apart from that, it takes my mind off the discomfort that sometimes comes with having periods. With pads, I can feel the flow (especially when shedding tissue), but with tampons, I don’t feel a thing! That said, on lighter days, pads are still my preferred choice.
I know many women are not comfortable with the thought of inserting something inside their bodies, but you will never believe in a tampon until you wear one. When I tried using one for the first time, it felt a little weird. Now, tampons are an integral part of my monthly cycle. They are truly one of the best inventions ever!
To ease your apprehension about using tampons, especially for first-timers, here are some basics you should know.
Instructions for Inserting a Non-applicator Tampon:
1. Make sure your hands are washed clean with soap and water. Dry them and unwrap the tampon (directions to unwrap can be found on the box).
2. Check if the string is securely attached to the tampon by tugging on it. . Sit or stand in a comfortable position (you could sit
on the toilet bowl or squat on the floor). There will be a dent in the tampon; hold the tampon at the dent with the help of your index finger and insert it into your vaginal canal.
4. Sometimes the tampon won’t go in smoothly because it’s pushing against the vaginal wall. You will have to pull it down slightly and reorient it.
5. You know you got it right by the ease with which it moves up, and the comfort you feel after it is inserted. An improperly inserted tampon is extremely uncomfortable. 6. Wash your hands clean after inserting.
