5 Myths About Pet Health

1 MYTH: The best way to socialize a shy dog is at the dog park.

MYTHBUSTER

Trying to desensitize nervous dogs by using the "flooding" technique at the dog park can backfire, says Susan Nelson, D.V.M., a clinical professor of general medicine at the Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University. Timid dogs can lash out or become even more fearful, she says. Instead, introduce them to one trusted dog at a time, she advises. Offer positive reinforcement such as treats when your dog exhibits relaxed behaviors, and remove them froma situation if they're showing signs of stress like a tucked tail, whining, shivering, and drooling. If you think your pet is ready for the dog park, start by observing from the outside, then gradually move closer while gauging your dog's reaction, Nelson says. If your dog seems comfortable at the entrance, go in, but continue to monitor their reactions closely. And be sure to keep your dog on a leash at first so you can vamoose if the situation changes.

2 MYTH: Essential oils are a great way to mask pet odor.
