Nora Simone Interviews Michelle Hirsch
Transliving|Issue 75
Imagine yourself walking a fashion-show runway. Booming music, photo-flashes, and hundreds of strangers scrutinising your every detail: wardrobe, hair, movement... everything!

Nora Simone Interviews Michelle Hirsch

Having done so, I assure you it is an empowering experience. A public-runway walk is a unique opportunity to demonstrate to the world who you and gain supreme confidence in yourself.

The opportunity for this experience is an annual gift to the transgender community from Michelle Hirsch. As leader of the First Event Fashion Show hosted by the Trans Community of New England (TCNE), she’s appreciated for advancing transgender people (women and men including young people) on their personal journey.

To help Transliving International readers learn more about amazing Michelle, she’s answered some frequently asked questions.

You’re busy. How do you know it is all worth it?

I’m selfish. Everything I do brings me joy: work, making music, and supporting the trans community. I thrive on the positive energy and vibes of others, so I seek to create and channel that energy towards me!

Describe a normal day

It’s sad to reflect on how different today is from before Covid-19. I work from home until 5:00 PM, go to the gym, make dinner, do a few small chores, then spend a few minutes in a hot tub soaking or watching TV before bed. Other than an occasional evening online meeting, that’s today’s routine.

A pre-Covid-19 day involved in-person meetings, and band rehearsal, or a gig, after work a few nights a week. In-person time with friends, TCNE, and music-making are sorely missed.

What is a benefit of being transgender?

BREE FRAM - Blazing trails to build a stronger military

U.S. Space Force Lt. Colonel Bree Fram will be remembered as a trailblazer for a transgender-inclusive military. This was not so obvious when we met about six years ago. However, she's well on her way to earn that distinction with a public track record of advocacy and leadership.

Sophie's 20 years later

Like for many others, the Covid years were more difficult in more ways than one for me. I had lost the occasional night out dressed, the ability to dress regularly, and had even more uncertainty of what the future held.
