Take The Leap!
CLEO Malaysia|October 2017

Millennials have long been labelled job-hoppers. But are we that different from past gens?

Take The Leap!

Meet Jade, 24. One job and two side incomes. She’s a Uni graduate, works 9-to-5, then by nights and weekends, she’s managing her online businesses and taking her hand drawn art pieces and handmade jewellery to markets.

Sounds exhausting? But, she’s paying off her car, still lives at home (property prices, pls...), goes on holidays, has a closet full of shoes and eats out maybe three times a week. All paid by her. Jade’s the average millennial. To give you an idea of who she is in numbers: She’ll most likely live longer than past gens, and she will average more than five careers and probably have 20 employers in total.

While it might feel like a HR nightmare, a research by Pew research showed that in 2016, 63.4 per cent of millennials who were currently employed had been with their employer for at least 13 months. In comparison, stats in the year 2000 showed that there were fewer GenXers who reported a similar job tenure. Long story short, surprise, surprise, job-hopping is not new!

Now, here’s another nugget of information: A Forbes article has also recently revealed that millennials are becoming increasingly loyal to their current employer. What ’s happening? We turn the job-hopping phenomenon on its head.

STICK TO ONE? UNLIKELY
