Struggle to remember people’s names after an introduction, or whether or not you switched off the bathroom light before leaving home this morning? You are not alone! Studies found that, after 25, our working memories fall by 10% each decade. Good news is, there are ways to improve it. Here are a few moves to give your ‘memory muscles’ a much-needed workout, and clever hacks to keep it sharp.
1. Pause the TV
When watching TV, pause it randomly, give yourself 30 seconds to memorise what’s on the screen, look away and then write down the items you saw. You should get better at this exercise quite quickly.
2. Be observant
When introduced to someone, look for something distinctive in their appearance. ‘A large part of having a good memory is about paying better attention,’ advises neuropsychologist Dr Joanna Iddon.
