Let’s get real: self-reflection may sometimes be daunting but it’s oh-so-necessary in order to push you in the direction of your best self. This issue, we’ve decided to put together four questions that will challenge you to put yourself out there and think beyond your limits. As motivational author Karen Salmansohn said: “A comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there.”
1 Am I in control of my own finances?
What sort of investor are you? Are you someone who invests in whichever direction or avenue you like – which potentially means you have full autonomy over your own finances? Or do you engage a licensed financial planner to look after your investment portfolio? Jennifer breaks down these two types for better clarity.
YOU MAKE AUTONOMOUS DECISIONS
If you’re what’s known as a retail investor, you open your own investment accounts online and invest in shares, derivatives, hedge funds, crowd funding, or mutual funds. What you want to buy or sell is completely within your control. However, you need to bear in mind several factors: how much time do you have to manage your investments especially if you are working; and what sort of expertise or knowledge do you have in the asset class you’re choosing to invest in? All these things will determine your investment outcome.
YOU ENGAGE THE SERVICES OF A LICENSED FINANCIAL PLANNER
A licensed financial planner will look after your investment portfolio – walking you through the proper financial planning process to determine your investment risk profile. They will then invest in the product most suited to you as an individual. Investment goals will be clearly defined and actively managed, or reviewed, by your professional planner on an annual basis according to a letter of engagement that you would have signed and agreed upon. This way, your investment return can be maximised to hedge against inflation.
