Should you still go sugar free or cut out carbs when fasting? Indra Balaratnam, consultant dietitian and founder of Indra Balaratnam Nutrition, gets real about healthy eating habits.
As we enter the fasting month this May, you may find yourself tweaking your eating habits, especially with all the fancy hotel buffets and Ramadan bazaars to pick from. But, if you’re on a strict diet, it can be tricky to follow through and still stay healthy during the fasting month. So, how do you prevent a fainting spell or deteriorating fitness? The answer, says Indra, is moderation boosted by an understanding of how your body works.
Her World: If you’re on a keto diet, should you stop during the fasting month?
Indra Balaratnam: “You can still continue to eat the foods that are suitable in your keto diet during the fasting month. Always make sure to include quality nutrition in the form of healthy fats, protein, lots of leafy greens, nuts, dairy, and a small amount of allowed carbs. And, drink plenty of water once the fast is over to replenish lost fluids.”
HW: Do trendy diets have an adverse affect on health, especially during the fasting month?
IB: “Like any diet, some people are more clued in on planning and making sure their meals are balanced; whereas others just make do with whatever food they can find and there's not much variety to it. So, you need to evaluate what you’re currently eating. In Ramadan, during the times you’re allowed to eat, do plan your meals to ensure you get the sufficient calories you need. Skimping on the amount of food – thinking that it will induce faster weight loss together with the Ramadan fast – is not a smart way to do it.
