Is ugly the “new” beautiful? Anti-fashion fashion is gaining momentum and for the right reasons
Ugly fashion. What exactly is it? At the mere mention of ugly fashion, you’ll be met with a blank stare or worse, a grimace. Unsurprisingly, the union might seem like a peculiar mix—look over their profiles on social media and you wouldn’t be hard-pressed to find the “It’s complicated” status hovering about with teenage-like moodiness on their profile page; scroll even further and you’ll discover a string of rampant comments from friends and strangers expressing their views on this strangely unusual marriage.
But why do we shudder at the thought of it or turn a blind eye? It is easy to see why: ugly fashion disrupts the va-va-voom and enchanting thrills often related to fashion. From slinky, silhouette baring gowns to alluring sky-high stilettos and precision-tailored suits, ugly fashion strips the highly sought after ideals of fashion in one clean swoop. Ask anyone what ugly fashion entails and a hoard of images immediately comes to mind: grotesque punk, the aesthetically questionable Crocs, the all-time favourite but boring Birkenstock and Maison Margiela’s love-it-or-hate-it split-toed Tabi boots.
