The New York Film Academy (NYFA) has a new address – Mumbai! NYFA Mumbai’s director Kitty Koo talks to Society about their Indian campus and their student Kangana Ranaut among other things.
We have heard innumerable stories of aspiring actors and filmmakers, who have travelled to Mumbai from across the country and globe, with Bollywood dreams in their eyes. Some have made it big, and the others continue their struggle to get the big break. As the ‘city of celluloid’, Mumbai has long been known to feed starry dreams to its people. And now, it goes notches higher in doing so.
With the prestigious New York Film Academy (NYFA) opening its campus in Lower Parel, Mumbai sure has gotten a colourful feather fluttering in its cap. Kitty Koo, the director of NYFA’s Mumbai centre and a doppelganger of Jennifer Aniston, shares her big plans about the Mumbai chapter with us, amidst talking about Hindi films. Born and brought up in Hong Kong, this Asian woman may not be well-versed with Indian languages but she sure has a good grip on the Indian film culture. She is all praise for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat. “I think Sanjay did a great job. We need more directors like him. There is so much thought put into every shot. Then the cast…it was perfect! Nobody could have played that role better than Ranveer. Also, look at Deepika in the film… a lot of close-ups that you see, where her eyes are bigger than her face… that’s what captures you. Then in the scene where Deepika is knitting the cloth on her husband’s head, you can feel the chemistry and love she shares with her husband. That’s what a director’s role is. They make you believe in the film and its emotions,” Koo explains, giving us her brief review of Padmaavat.
