A Ketogenic diet is a low-carb and high-fat diet. It involves drastically reducing the carbohydrate intake to your body and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbohydrate puts your body into a metabolic state called Ketosis. When this happens, the body becomes extremely efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver that can supply energy for the brain.
How does it work? - Ketosis is a metabolic state in which your body starts using fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. When people eat less than 50 grams of carbohydrates a day the body will quickly run out of fuel (blood sugar). Then the body starts breaking down protein and fat for energy and this can make you lose weight.
