the interview:
AMM - What inspired your creations?
Ray - The inspiration for my creations is my own personal style. I regularly could not find the type of menswear I liked and finally decided one day to make what I wanted to wear since I couldn’t find it in stores.
AMM - Tell us a bit about your personal designer’s background.
Ray - From what I’m told it started from a very young age. I was surrounded by men and women who all liked to “represent” though each of them had their own personal style. I apparently really held to this belief of personal style such that my one and only temper tantrum as a child was when my Mom would let me wear matching red socks with the shirt she picked out!
AMM - Oh, I know the feeling! How do you capture your design ideas?
Ray - I keep a drawing pad with me everywhere. There’s even one next to my bed so I can capture designs that may come to me while I sleep. I’ve awakened a number of times and started drawing.
AMM - Eat and sleep as a true designer. With so many designers in North America alone, how do you keep your designs fresh?
Ray - Wow, that’s a good question. I guess I don’t really obsess about it. My likes/dislikes in regard to my look change regularly and so, to satisfy my own style desires, change is necessary. I also get inspiration from other designers. Even when viewing something I don’t like I try to figure out what exactly I don’t like about it and how would I change it. Ideas come from this source quite a bit.
