Nathaniel: “We’re both from Boulder, Colorado, which is a pretty small town. We went to the University Of Colorado, ended up being in a physics class together and became really good friends. Both of us came [from] hip-hop and rap as kids, so started fucking around and having fun, making music. We started playing shows as we were both wrapping up with university… organically promoting our music on MySpace and all that.”
Sean: “We were big fans of Lil Jon and Andrew W.K., and this fusing of a lot of different sounds. For us it was like, we just wanted to rock a show and a party. We just did it out of pure innocence, and that’s why we went to school and graduated with our degrees - because we didn’t bank on it, we weren’t like, ‘This is our plan for the next 13 years’. It just happened to attach and gravitate towards people that liked our music.”
…And it was partially a reaction to small-minded scene politics
Nathaniel: “We were very tongue-in-cheek about a lot of things, but the thing that we were most serious about was having fun, and making sure that we made that fun inclusive and contagious for everyone who was there. We grew up in some scenes that were sort of insulated, and I think our music was a direct reaction to that. Like, fuck that. You don’t only have to listen to certain bands or only watch shows a certain way to have fun with our music, and selfishly we just wanted to make music that was fun for us, easy and intuitive for us to make.”
