School’s out and classmates may be travelling or still in town, but summer is the time to make some new friends whether it’s at the pool, summer camp or playdate. Making friends is important for children’s development and self-confidence as it’s a mutual choice relationship where they feel protected, loved and get to have fun.
Understand your child’s friendship style
Children have different styles when it comes to socialising. Some may enjoy being in groups, while others prefer one-on-one interaction. Never force your child to pick either one, but rather know what they prefer and embrace it.
You can also tailor the activities you choose for them accordingly. For example, an outdoor trip would be more suitable for an extroverted child, while a summer camp with lots of indoor projects in twos would be more suitable for a child who’s more on the shy side.
Have a conversation
You learn a lot about your child by talking to them; you also get to teach your child the right skills during conversation. Discuss friendships with your child and observe: are they just talking or also listening? Are they cutting you off? Did they walk away mid-conversation? These are all signs which may point to a need for improvement in the social arena.
