This is the 2nd of the economically priced high-speed zooms from Nikon, the first being the popular 28-70 mm f/2.8 lens. One more lens in the same series, the 70-180 mm f/2.8 is expected to join as per the published Nikon roadmap. Being a low cost lens it does not belong to the premium 'S' grade category.
There is speculation on the Net that this is a rebadged Tamron lens with nearly the same specifications. This has not been confirmed or denied by either Tamron or Nikon. However, Tamron has announced that they have a technical collaboration with Nikon. In any case, we should go by the merits of the lens rather than its perceived origins considering that both companies have stellar reputations. Also, we should give due consideration to the fact that it carries a Nikkor badge and hence comes with the advantages associated with it.
