The British racing calendar was still tentatively going last weekend even as events across the Continent were postponed or axed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Races were held up and down the country at the weekend including the Circuit of Ingleborough (see p10) in the Pennines and the Betty Pharoah memorial race in Glamorgan.
But come Tuesday morning, following a change in government strategy that advised everyone to institute stricter and more wide-ranging social distancing measures, British Cycling closed down all sanctioned events until April 30.
That means everything from top tier racing right down to a Wednesday night crit for cat 3/4s will no longer run for nearly two months, and possibly beyond. Cycling Time Trials had yet to make a public announcement at time of going to press but a similar shutdown of events appears likely.
