Tour champ starts campaign while Adam Yates shines.
Team Sky professed to be pleased with Geraint Thomas’s progression towards his peak in July at the Tour de France after a low-key return to racing at the Tour of Valencia following a long break.
Thomas hadn’t raced since the Tour of Britain last September and tumbled out of contention for overall glory in the mountains of Valencia, finishing in 44th place.
But Rod Ellingworth, performance director at Team Sky, said the team knew he “wasn’t on form to win the race”. He added that Thomas “wanted to give the prologue a crack” and ended up 13th, just 20 seconds down.
