50-year-old Steven Ng has run the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 14 times, and is not about to stop anytime soon.
I was involved in sports from a very young age. I was active in track and field events throughout all of my school days and doing a wide variety of events including short sprints, team relays and cross country running. However, it was only during my National Service did I decide to focus on distance running.
Steven had served in the Commando unit when he was in the Army. As part of the elite Infantry, he remembers the physically tough training and how he was pushed to be better than he ever though was possible. To maintain a level of base fitness after he had finished with his service, he signed up for some 10km road runs. The momentum kept up and he was running full marathons within a few short years. “Despite the scepticism from others that are not active in sports, I discovered that running serves as a stress reliever for me, and is a healthy outlet for all the varied challenges that I encounter in life,” Steven explains.
