Are we about to enter the top tier of international marathons?
The Abbott World Marathon Majors comprise of six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world: Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, Virgin Money London Marathon, BMW Berlin Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon. Is Singapore set to be the next?
Tim Hadzima, the Executive Director of the World Marathon Majors, spoke to RUN Singapore earlier this year and has stated that there is a long-term business plan in place within the organisation. The six current Marathon Majors will progressively be joined by another three races for an annual ninerace series
The World Marathon Major Push
The first ‘new’ marathon set to join the six established races has been revealed to be the Singapore Marathon, and while speculation continues to be rife in the local running community, the longterm preparations are already underway. Within the international sports industry, Singapore is widely regarded as the opener for the other World Marathon Majors to be announced.
While still unconfirmed, the word on the street is that Chengdu in China is likely to host one, while the final race to join the roster further down the line will be held in Africa, the home continent of the fastest runners in the world.
