FOR Energetic, entertaining sound; detail; dynamics; size
AGAINST Beyond limitations set by size, nothing
Compared with the likes of the Mission LX2 and Q Acoustics 3020s, the Spektor 1s are almost toy-like. At just shy of 24cm, they’re only about twice as tall as a CD case and not much wider.
The big advantage of such compact dimensions is that these speakers will happily nest in all sorts of nooks and spaces their two rivals here can’t. We see them as ideal partners for a micro system or part of a starter separates set-up – or even either side of a TV.
Their build is good for the money, but still behind the Missions and exceptional Q Acoustics in this respect. The enclosures are so small that rigidity comes almost as standard, while the finish is neat. Our review samples are wrapped in the walnut option, though a black ash alternative is also available. These speakers are single-wired only, which keeps things simple and clutterfree. That’s just fine with us.
Despite the entry-level status, Dali hasn’t compromised on the drive units. The 11cm mid/bass driver uses one of the company’s distinctive wood-fibre cones, just like the ones in the brand’s high-end products. Wood fibre is claimed to offer a good balance between rigidity, low weight and self-damping.
