Compact, easy to drive, and made for two to travel, Motorhome-World’s first new Discoverer Journey sold within an hour and a half of going on display at the 2020 Caravan Show. Probably a record by most standards and testimony to the interest shown by the public.
Okay, with the coronavirus destined for our shores, South Africans may have become influenced by America’s doomsday preppers and hatched a plan of escaping the city and the crowds! Let’s face it, the Journey is the ideal urban escape vehicle.
Nevertheless, this brand-new model was snatched up quickly and for honorable intentions – of hitting the so-called open road to destinations far and wide, offering the new owners good living comfort and a premium driving experience. The advantage of this type of vehicle is the ease of driving and parking, and fuel efficiency is another plus. All in all, it wouldn’t be out of place used as daily transport – unlikely perhaps, but not impossible.
Based on the 2.3-litre diesel Fiat Ducato panel van – Europe’s No.1 choice for a motorhome base – the Journey design is an expansion for the Motorhome-World range of vehicles in that it is a panel van conversion rather than a new body construction.
What has been fitted into the interior is nothing short of amazing, both in terms of utilisation of available space, as well as visual appeal. It is modern, so forget the fact that it might have started out life as the proverbial ‘ugly duckling’ panel van because now it is in a league termed ‘highly desirable’, the princess of the ball!
And what you see now may just be the beginning; imagine bush bars, a winch, bigger aggressive-looking wheels, and perhaps raised suspension – even a 4x4 conversion if that’s possible? It could just be the new, ultimate, go-anywhere vehicle.
