In courtroom testimony that stopped the entertainment world in its tracks last week, at long last Britney Spears detailed in her own words why she wanted to break free of her father Jamie Spears’ controversial 13-year conservatorship.
Speaking quietly but assuredly, the 39-year old dialled in via a remote connection to the Los Angeles courtroom, where a judge heard her request to end a conservatorship put in place in 2008 due to her mental health issues – without being evaluated.
“[My conservators] have done a good job at exploiting my life,” said Britney. “So I feel like it should be an open court hearing and they should listen and hear what I have to say. I haven’t done anything in the world to deserve this treatment… it’s not OK for them to force me to do anything I don’t want to do...”
Here, Woman’s Day looks at how the dramatic proceeding unfolded.
SAM STEPS UP
Since they began dating in 2016, it was hard to tell if Sam Asghari, 26, was on board with Jamie’s control. But last week, on the day of her hearing, Sam showed his support in a “free Britney” T-shirt. She says, “All I want is to own my money and for this to end and for my boyfriend to drive me in his f**king car.”
