Have you heard the buzz? Beekeeping is an excellent hobby and a great way to support the world’s dwindling bee numbers. Plus, you’ll have access to a never-ending supply of honey. Doug Purdie, author of Backyard Bees, explains everything you need to know when setting up a hive of your own.
THE BENEFITS
Not only is beekeeping a great hobby, but it has benefits for everybody.
“Just one hive in your backyard will help pollinate flowers many kilometres away, which is a bonus for all the vege gardeners in your area,” says Doug. “If you like honey, you’ll have plenty for you and your family, friends and neighbours, with the average suburban yield being upwards of 50kg per year.”
Beekeeping will also open your eyes to the cycle of nature around you. This awareness, Doug explains, means you are likely to be more tolerant of pests, and therefore your garden and beyond will enjoy the benefits of all the pollinators.
