It’s been described as the most famous unsolved murder case in US history but this month, due to a group of volunteer sleuths known as the Case Breakers, the puzzle may have finally been cracked.
The Zodiac Killer terrorised California in the late 1960s, shooting or stabbing at least seven people, two of whom survived. For years he sent taunting messages and ciphers to the media claiming he actually had 37 victims, and threatening to kill more if his words were not printed.
These letters all opened with the phrase, “This is the Zodiac speaking,” spawning the Zodiac Killer moniker.
The police only officially named one suspect in the case – convicted child molester Arthur Leigh Allen, but he died of a heart attack in 1992 before a case could be built.
GATHERING EVIDENCE
Over the years, documentaries, video games and films have been made about the Zodiac. Identifying him has become popular among amateur detectives but until now he has remained a mystery.
Then the Case Breakers got involved. “The journalist Dale Julin came to me with all the evidence he’d gathered [about the Zodiac] two years ago,” Jen Bucholtz, a member of the Case Breakers exclusively tells Woman’s Day.
